What Kind of Asian are you?
As part of my Motion Graphics module at University, I created a kinetic typography piece based on the poem "What kind of Asian are you?" by Alex Dang. The poem addresses the hegemonic beliefs of the model minority myth and the absurdity of Asian Americans trying to justify their cultural citizenship. I used kinetic typography and abstract visuals to bring the poem to life in a powerful yet sensitive way, with the goal of promoting activism and enthusiasm among viewers.
The tone of the video is serious and passionate, reflecting the anger and frustration of Dang and the Asian-American community. I chose a dark, contrasting palette and dramatic lighting to emphasise the emotional range of the poem. The use of visuals within the animation helps to present information in a simple, straightforward manner.
