Ramadan Idents for STAR Channels
Our task was to create a series of channel idents for the STAR Channels in the MENA region, specifically for airing during the Ramadan period. The challenge was to design idents that faithfully represented the spirit and traditions of Ramadan while also maintaining the identity of the STAR channels and its sub-brands.
Design and Animation
We chose a papercraft style for these idents because we thought it would work well with STAR Channels’ signature glowing arch. The way the light interacts with the layered paper elements creates a nice play of light and shadow that fits the brand’s look. The arch sweeps past a mosque at sunset, marking the time people break their fast during Ramadan. As the moon rises, lights come on in the mosque and town, creating a warm, meaningful moment. We also added Fanoos lanterns, which symbolise hope and are a big part of Ramadan, to give the scene even more cultural connection.
Early Development
Some early frames I made in Illustrator, mainly using the elements of the mosque, crescent moon, Fanoos/lantern and a cannon (every sunset, they fire a cannon before Maghrib prayers to signal the end of the daily fast). The cannon was removed from the final render as the scene felt too cluttered when the glowing arch was added in.
